Voting Tomorrow?

What do you get to vote for in the elections tomorrow?  Unless you are one of my neighbors, your ballot is most likely different from mine.  For example, City of Riverside voters get to vote for their next Mayor, and Norco voters get to elect two City Council members and decide if a hotel/motel tax should be increased.  I get to vote in a school board election.

I reviewed the 12-page (including covers) sample ballot and information pamphlet sent to me by Riverside County’s Registrar of Voters, and noticed that the sample ballot and candidate statements only take up two pages.  The other ten pages contain general election info, a vote-by-mail application, Census 2010 info and instructions (or drawings) in six different places that explain how to draw a line and mark my vote.

Considering that there are over 800,000 registered voters in Riverside County (as of Oct 2009), it seems that some money could be saved by paring down the information pamphlet.  Since this information is also available online, I called the Registrar’s office to see if they could stop sending me pamphlets.  They can’t.
