Sights: Space Shuttle Endeavour on the Streets of LA

October 15, 2012 by Ole Leave a Comment

We drove out to Los Angeles yesterday to see the Space Shuttle Endeavour. We caught up to the shuttle at Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Menlo Ave. / Bill Robertson Ln. Thousands of other people were there too…

Sights: MWD Dirt Lot – Victoria Grove

October 5, 2012 by Ole 1 Comment

This dirt lot in the middle of the Victoria Grove community in Riverside belongs to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD):

MWD Dirt Lot - no more orange trees

Just a few weeks ago, this lot was bordered by beautiful orange trees:

Orange trees on Blackburn Road

What happened to the trees?

As explained in the following post on a member agency’s Facebook page, MWD removed the trees as “part of their long-term maintenance”:

MWD explanation

So, according to the Metropolitan Water District, “long-term maintenance” includes destroying mature, healthy and well-maintained orange trees that were located directly across from an elementary school in the middle of a community named after orange groves. Got it.

Sights: Chopping Down Riverside’s Heritage

September 17, 2012 by Ole 6 Comments

This row of healthy orange trees along Blackburn Road in the community of Victoria Grove is not an uncommon sight in Riverside. Neighborhood orange trees are nice reminders of Riverside’s citrus heritage and the orange groves on which many of our homes were built.

Here is that same row of healthy orange trees being cut down and removed.

Orange trees being cut down

I guess I will contact the Metropolitan Water District to find out why.

Time to contact MWD

Orange Church of God Sign

August 16, 2012 by Ole 40 Comments

Have you seen this picture of the repugnant sign at the Orange Church of God?

Orange Church of God Sign

Could this church be in our neighboring Orange County?

Nope. It’s a fake.

This picture is from a website that allows you to create fake church signs (and many other types of fake images)…

The website also includes this disclaimer:

Note: these church signs aren’t real, they don’t exist in the real world. You’ll be making a fake photo of a church sign.

Sights: Turkey Vultures at Lake Mathews Dam

July 31, 2010 by Ole 3 Comments

We saw these turkey vultures flying over Lake Mathews Dam a few days ago. My wife had her camera with her so we decided to stop and take a few pictures.

We were curious about the bird with the wing tag so I consulted google and found a conservation site that had pictures of other turkey vultures tagged with white wing tags. I eventually found out that this bird was tagged in the summer of 2009 either at Irvine Lake in Orange County or at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area.

I also found a site operated by the U.S. Geological Survey that lets you report sightings of tagged birds.  So if you see a tagged bird, visit www.reportband.gov/.

I took this picture in the Tuscany Village neighborhood in Riverside.  Not too bad for a cell phone camera.
