$5 Movies at Dos Lagos 15

December 23, 2017 by Ole Leave a Comment

Like most people, I like movies.  When we first moved out to Riverside, there were no movie theaters close to us.  Now there are three within a few miles, two of which are practically across the street from each other.

One of them is in The Shops at Dos Lagos in Corona, which has been operated by Starlight Cinemas since 2014.

As of December 23, 2017, regular adult admission is $12, but if you go before noon or anytime on Tuesday or Thursday, admission is only $5 (not including surcharges for 3D or EPEX formats). These are great prices for such a nice theater.

In fact, just a few nights ago, I saw a movie on opening night for $5. Hard to beat that deal.

A little history:

This theater opened in 2006 as the Krikorian Dos Lagos 15. Although it was a nice theater, Krikorian closed abruptly in July 2010.

Krikorian Dos Lagos 15 - Jan 2010

The theater was reopened a few weeks later by Phoenix Big Theaters.

Phoenix Dos Lagos 15 - Aug 2011

Then in 2014, Starlight Cinemas took over. Here is how it looks as of December 2017:

What Are Those Pipes on Temescal by Dos Lagos / Corona Crossings?

April 26, 2015 by Ole 2 Comments

Have you driven on Temescal Canyon Road recently near Corona Crossings and Dos Lagos, and wondered what those pipes running along (and under) the road are for?

Brine Line pipes - Dos Lagos

Brine Line pipes - Dos Lagos

I was curious too, but couldn’t find anything on Corona’s website or the contractor’s website. After a bit of searching, I found some information on the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority’s (SAWPA) website.

Here is what I found:
(image and quoted text from SAWPA’s website)

Brine Line pipes - Dos Lagos

Reach V Rehabilitation and Improvement Project

The work includes lining of approximately five miles of the Inland Empire Brine Line in the Temescal Valley, Riverside County and the City of Corona. The project begins at Temescal Canyon Road at Tom Barnes Road and continues southbound on Temescal Canyon Road to Glen Ivy Road.

What is the Inland Empire Brine Line?

Short answer: A separate system that transports salty wastewater generated by certain industrial processes for treatment prior to discharge to the ocean.

The Inland Empire Brine Line (Brine Line) is a unique and indispensable resource for the Inland Empire region, providing a facility for exporting salt from inland areas to the ocean. Salt export is important for protecting water quality and meeting regulatory requirements. The Brine Line provides a viable salty wastewater disposal facility for industries that generate salty wastewater during the manufacturing process, or from cooling, boiler blowdown or other processes. Salty wastewater from industry is redirected from the local wastewater treatment plant to the Brine Line, reducing the salt discharged from treatment plants into the Santa Ana River protecting plants and animals dependent on lower salt water and reducing the salt which percolates into the groundwater basins.

Why does it need to be rehabilitated and improved?

Short answer: After a failure in 2011, a study revealed that about 21,000 feet of pipe was at medium/high risk and should be repaired.

In October 2011, a catastrophic failure of the Brine Line occurred on Reach 5, a 22 mile portion of the Brine Line that provides service to customers within Eastern Municipal Water District’s service area. Subsequent excavation and repair of the brine line revealed the pipe is “out of round” or slightly oval. […]

In February 2013, SAWPA hired RMC Water and Environmental to perform a risk assessment of the Reach V Pipeline. The work included preparation of a pipeline condition study to evaluate approximately eight (8) miles of Reach V. The results of the study found that of the 41,000 feet of pipe evaluated, about 21,000 feet of pipe were in the high and medium risk categories and recommended repair with a trechless repair method such as a cured-in-place pipe lining (CIPP). The remaining 20,000 feet of pipe were placed in the low risk category for continued monitoring through periodic CCTV inspection.

So, what are those pipes?

Short answer: Bypass pipes that will carry the wastewater while the Brine Line is being repaired.

By-pass pumping of exisiting flows is necessary with this rehabiliation method. Four separate by-pass systems will be necessary to implement the project. The longest by-pass is about 12,000 feet.

How much will this cost?

Short answer: The contract amount was $12,561,000.

In August 2014, SAWPA issued a notice inviting bids for construction of the project. On October 21, 2014, SAWPA awarded the construction of the project to Charles King Company. The total contract amount is $12,561,000. A notice to construct was issued to the contractor in January 2015. […] Funding for the Project is through the California State Water Resources Control Board Clean Water State Revolving Fund Loan Program.

*** Update 11/29/15 ***

In response to a question on Facebook regarding who foots the bill for the repairs, I found the following information in the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority’s 2014-2015 budget about SAWPA’s funding sources:

The Agency’s major revenue source is discharge fees from the Brine Line Enterprise. Other funding sources include grants and contracts, interest and investments, capacity sales, use of reserves/SRF loans, member and other agency contributions, and mitigation credit sales.

Specifically regarding the Brine Line Reach V repairs:

The Agency will apply for SRF loans to fund most of the project costs for the Reach V Capital Repairs Project. If the loan is received, the reserve funds will not be used.

I also found out that while this particular contract is for $12.561 million, the total capital funding request for these repairs was $19 million.

I am not involved with this project or this agency in any way, so I don’t have any firsthand knowledge of how this will be funded. I am just trying to pass along the information I find.

*** End updated info ***

How long will it take?

The construction duration is 14 months and is anticipated to be complete in early 2016.

Updated 04/29/16: An updated schedule was uploaded to the SAWPA website after I wrote this post. Here is an image from SAWPA’s website showing dates:

My only source for this information is SAWPA’s website. I am not involved in this project in any way. If you have additional information, questions or corrections, please use the comment form below.

Wood Ranch – Dos Lagos, Corona

November 2, 2013 by Ole 1 Comment

Wood Ranch, Dos Lagos - Corona, CA

We have been going to Wood Ranch in Dos Lagos since it opened. Not often, but at least a few times each year. This is a nice place, with good food.

Wood Ranch, Dos Lagos - Corona, CA

These rolls make me wish I never gave up bread. Fresh, hot and delicious. I ate my fair share before I gave them up. Now I have to watch as my family devours them.

Wood Ranch Rolls

You go to Wood Ranch for the meat, but they also have salads. My wife changes it up with chicken and salmon, while I opt for the Caesar.

One of Wood Ranch’s specialties is tri-tip. It is great on its own, but I always preferred the tri-tip sliders.

My new favorite, which has me visiting Wood Ranch more often, is the beef brisket. It is tender, juicy and spiced with a peppery rub.

Steam Haus Gastropub – Dos Lagos, Corona

September 2, 2012 by Ole 3 Comments

Steam Haus Gastropub

Steam Haus Gastropub officially opened for business yesterday in the Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos in Corona.

We stopped by, and are glad we did.

Steam Haus is unique, not only for its food, but also for its theme… Steampunk. Not sure what that is? Google it or just show up to Steam Haus and enjoy. While the servers and a few customers were dressed in their finest Steampunk attire, we and most everyone else wore typical end of summer attire – shorts and flip flops.

On to the food…

I ordered the Pork Belly Po’ Boy, which is served on ciabatta bread with spicy aioli. I have never tried pork belly before, so I decided to be adventurous and try something new. The pork belly was hot, juicy and tender, and the bread was fresh and slightly grilled. The spicy aioli took it over the top. This is a tasty sandwich.

My sons ordered the A.M. Burger, which is a burger patty made with Pat LaFrieda beef, topped with a fried egg, bacon and onion jam, and served between two waffles. I had no idea what a “Pat LaFrieda” burger was, so I consulted Google and learned that he (Pat LaFrieda, Jr.) is referred to as the “Magician of Meat” and is featured on the Food Network show “Meat Men”. We have never seen this show, so my boys were more impressed with the fact that the burger was served on waffles.

Steam Haus has a unique menu. I couldn’t find it online so I posted it here:

Steam Haus also has a lot of beer. I pretty much stopped drinking when I got married and had kids, so I’ll let Steam Haus explain what they have (from the Steam Haus Facebook page):

Hey there Guys & Gals! Today is the Steam Haus Gastropub’s GRAND OPENING!! 101 bottles of beer on the wall, 30 awesome draft beers, a grand wine collection & a mouth watering menu full of such crazy delights as our AM Burger & Ale Floats!! So if you’re into craft brew & pub food with a fine dining twist, come celebrate with us!!

Urban Thai – Dos Lagos, Corona

May 17, 2012 by Ole Leave a Comment

Urban Thai has been located in the Shops at Dos Lagos for years, but my wife and I didn’t try it for the first time until about a few weeks ago. I imagine that a lot of people miss this place since it is located between two closed businesses in a part of the center that doesn’t seem to get much traffic. I wasn’t even sure it was open when we drove up the first time.

We ordered the beef satay as an appetizer on our first visit, and followed up with the chicken satay on our second visit. Both were tender and tasty.

Urban Thai has very reasonable lunch specials, which are served with soup, rice, salad and an entree. On both visits, I ordered the Fire Beef, which is a slightly spicy mixture of beef, green beans and red peppers. Good stuff.

My wife tried the Chicken Curry with green (mild) curry on our first visit, but decided to go with the Spicy Chicken Ramen on our second visit. She really liked the ramen.

I am not in a position to compare this place to other Thai food restaurants because this is only the second one I have ever visited. What I can say is that I enjoy the food and plan to go back. I hope that more people find this place and give it a try.

There is also an Urban Thai in Aliso Viejo.

Miguel’s – Dos Lagos, Corona

October 22, 2010 by Ole 1 Comment

Miguel's - Dos Lagos

If you drive on the 91 freeway through Corona, you have probably seen Miguel’s near the W. 6th Street exit.  This is how we found Miguel’s when we first moved out here from Orange County.  Fortunately for us, Miguel’s opened a new location in the Dos Lagos shopping center in South Corona, which is closer to our home.

Our meal always starts with fresh chips and homemade salsa.  The salsa is smooth with a little bit of heat and is unlike any I’ve had at any other Mexican restaurant.

Our favorite appetizer is the Sonora Roll, which is tender chile verde pork and cheese rolled in a flour tortilla.  The chile verde pork is one of Miguel’s specialties, and it makes this appetizer amazing.

I’ve tried many meals over the years. A few of my past favorites are “Los Taquitos” and “El Chimi”. Unlike the ultra hard-shelled taquitos with more tortilla than meat that you get at many restaurants, Miguel’s taquitos are thick, full of meat, and perfectly crisp.  If you like taquitos, you should try these.

My new favorite is Miguel’s Carne Asada, which is also served with a tomatillo enchilada.

Miguel's - Dos Lagos

My wife used to order the Enchiladas de Camaron (shrimp), but she has switched to Maria’s Chopped Salad, which is served in a giant flour tortilla shell and includes chicken, tomatoes, Sonora beans and cheese. This is her favorite salad anywhere.

Miguel's - Dos Lagos

One of the nicest features is Miguel’s location, which is right on the lake.

There is also a nice bar area, which probably serves every tequila known to man.

Miguel's - Dos Lagos

In addition to the Dos Lagos location, Miguel’s has full service locations in West Corona (off the 91) and Foothill Ranch (South Orange County), along with numerous quick service Miguel’s Jr. restaurants throughout the Inland Empire.

$5 Tuesdays at Dos Lagos 15

August 24, 2010 by Ole Leave a Comment

Like most people, we like movies.  When we first moved out to Riverside, there were no movie theaters close to us.  Now there are three within a few miles, two of which are practically across the street from each other.

Although it was a nice theater, the Krikorian at Dos Lagos closed abruptly in early July 2010.  The theater was reopened a few weeks later by Phoenix Big Theaters.  To show support for the new operator, I took the family to see a movie on the Tuesday night the theater reopened.  We were pleased to find out that tickets cost only $5 on Tuesdays.

Although the theater currently shows older and independent movies, $5 is such a comparatively low price that we went back on a subsequent Tuesday to see another movie.

This is a nice theater, and according to the Press Enterprise, the “not-quite-new titles” are temporary “until new deals are reached for first-run fare.”

Phoenix Big Cinemas at Dos Lagos

If you have been to the Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos recently, you probably already know that the Krikorian Theatres 15 is closed.

According to the Press-Enterprise, the new operator, Phoenix Big Cinemas, will reopen the location as the Dos Lagos Stadium 15 Movie Theatre next week.  Future plans for the reopoened theatres include expanded concessions and digital projection.
