Rancho Cucamonga Quakes – August 29, 2013

August 30, 2013 by Ole Leave a Comment

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes vs. High Desert Mavericks - 08/29/13

After our first minor league baseball game at Storm Stadium a few months ago, I learned that the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes franchise is the Class A Advanced minor league team of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Dodgertown - Rancho Cucamonga

My youngest son is a huge Dodgers fan, so we went to our first Quakes game a few days ago. The game was a lot of fun. The Quakes beat the High Desert Mavericks 7-5, and because the Quakes scored 7 runs, we got free tacos from Jack in the Box.

After the game, I “liked” the Quakes on Facebook, and found out that Matt Kemp would be the designated hitter on Thursday, 08/29/13. I bought tickets for that game too.

Matt Kemp (0 for 5) and the Quakes (14-3 loss to the High Desert Mavericks) didn’t have a great time last night, but we did.

Minor league games are a lot of fun… easy parking, smaller crowds, less expensive tickets, great baseball and a lot of promotions and entertainment for the family. When I took my son to a Dodgers game a few weeks ago, it probably took about an hour to get out of Dodger stadium after the game. I doubt that it takes us more than 10 minutes to get from our seats to the street after a minor league game.

Besides, where else can you see a Rallysaurus dance to YMCA and get free tacos if your team scores 7 runs?

We are now Quakes fans. Go Quakes!

You can find information on the following Southern California Class A Advanced teams on the MILB.com website:

High Desert Mavericks (Seattle Mariners)
Inland Empire 66ers (Los Angeles Angels)
Lake Elsinore Storm (San Diego Padres)
Lancaster JetHawks (Houston Astros)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (Los Angeles Dodgers)

The Hat – Rancho Cucamonga

July 10, 2011 by Ole 1 Comment

If you like pastrami sandwiches, you might want to drive out to The Hat in Rancho Cucamonga…  but, make sure that you are hungry.

I’ve heard about The Hat for a while, but didn’t try it for the first time until a few weeks ago.  Since then, my sons and I have gone back twice, although one time it was so crowded that we couldn’t find a place to sit.

The sandwiches are pretty big, and very good.  The chili cheese fries are even bigger.  The first time we went to The Hat, I got an order of chili cheese fries and an order of regular fries.  The order of chili cheese fries was so large, that my boys and I didn’t finish it, let alone touch the other order of fries.

While I prefer the pastrami, The Hat has many other items including roast beef sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs and cold sandwiches.

I think we might go here again today.

Bass Pro Shops – Rancho Cucamonga, CA

August 20, 2010 by Ole Leave a Comment

My youngest son enjoyed his first time fishing so much that he is asking me every day to take him again. Since I have lost track of the fishing equipment my dad and I used when I was a kid, it was time to go shopping.

After checking out the selection of rods and reels at our local sporting goods store, we decided to try out Bass Pro Shops in Rancho Cucamonga. This place is awesome.

When we walked in for the first time, it took a few minutes to take everything in… aquariums, rock formations, stuffed animals, and lots of stuff to buy. Check out the pictures on the store’s website to get an idea of how huge this place is.

It reminded me of the Blues Brothers when Jake and Elwood were driving through the mall and Jake said, “This place has got everything.”

If you are in to hiking, camping, kayaking, boating, fishing, hunting, shooting, archery… (you get the idea), then this is your place. The fishing section alone is the largest I have ever seen.

In addition to all of the merchandise, this store has an indoor shooting range, an indoor archery range, a NASCAR simulator, a full service fish restaurant and a shooting arcade.

I have found that big stores often suffer from poor customer service, but not this place. I saw five employees working in the fishing section alone, and there were probably more. Two of the employees helped me pick out what I needed, and I appreciated that they did not try to steer me into the most expensive equipment.

The next time we need anything for the great outdoors, we will definitely be back.

Famous Dave’s – Rancho Cucamonga

August 11, 2010 by Ole Leave a Comment

Feast! Feast! Feast! If you don’t recognize this chant then you probably haven’t been to Famous Dave’s.

2. The Bear

This is our favorite barbecue place, and yes, we like it better than that place that shares the same name as B.B. King’s guitar. What is so good about this place?  Pretty much everything.

4. Inside Famous Dave's

My personal favorite is the hickory-smoked wonder known as the Texas Beef Brisket. Until I found Famous Dave’s, the only beef brisket I’ve found in our area has resembled leather covered with barbecue sauce.  This brisket is so tender that you can separate it with a fork.

Famous Dave’s has won a bunch of awards for its ribs and just about everything else.  I definitely agree that they serve the best ribs.  We order them naked, meaning that they are served without barbecue sauce. The ribs are great with just the dry rub, but we also like to have the option of trying Dave’s other sauces.

Your server will give you a rundown of Dave’s five different sauces before your meal. My favorite is the “Devil’s Spit”, which as you can imagine is spicier than the other sauces.

We have also tried the Georgia Chopped Pork and Hot Link Sausage.  The chopped pork is my oldest son’s favorite, and it is as good as any I have ever tried.  Barbecue meals are served with cornbread muffins and corn on the cob, along with your choice of sides.  Our favorite sides are the Drunkin’ Apples and the Wilbur Beans, which include pieces of pork, brisket and hot links.

Famous Dave’s also serves chicken, fish, sandwiches, soups and salads.  Although we normally stick with the barbecue selections, I always like to start out with a Caesar Salad.

If you like barbecue, then you’ll like this place.  If you don’t like this place, then you probably don’t like barbecue.
